Anime First Reaction: Technoroid Overmind

By Josh PiedraJanuary 6, 2023

There are two things I love the most in sci-fi… time travel and artificial intelligence. Technoroid Overmind has the latter in the form of Androids so I decided that with this being an original story AND it’s also about music which I have been enjoying lately that it was worth the look! Was it able to mesh this together into a sleeper hit of the season?

Let’s Go!

First Episode Synopsis

The world is shrinking as landmasses become more and more submerged by water. Because of this, the human population has severely declined and it can no longer sustain itself without assistance. Androids have become the solution and this show focuses on four of them living together in a complex. There’s one little problem… they’re all idiots.

Well… idiots might be too harsh of a term. More accurately, they are not programmed to think about things a normal human would… like the concept of earning money to pay for things… like their electric bill. So… they decide to find a way to earn money and discover the Babel Tower… a place where you can go, become an idol and win money after clearing levels past level five.

They go and try out and… well… yeah. Sorry to say but this is where I turned the episode off.

Worth Watching?

NO – The concept was intriguing. Androids learning to become idols means we could’ve gotten a cool soundtrack, some cool experiences, and all that but the biggest problem this show has is that it doesn’t take itself seriously. This is trying very hard to be a comedy to where it’s just trying too hard. The characters, especially Cobalt, are highly obnoxious and while the whole “dumb to life” aspect was cute when it was mentioned, it just became embarrassing to watch.

Maybe there are some out there who would enjoy this but for me, personally, it did not meet the expectations I had with the show. They didn’t give you much of a reason to care about any of the characters out of the gate. They simply just passed them off as inept robots that seem to easily fall apart… Cobalt lost his head twice in the first ten minutes.

To me, this is a prime example of a great concept ruined by poor execution. Can’t win them all but hey… there are better shows out there this season.
