Rollback Netcode Coming To Persona 4 Arena Ultimax

Finally, there’s good news that Atlus’s upcoming fighting game Persona 4 Arena Ultimax will get rollback netcode. Fighting game fans wondered and asked if the game would get the netcode.

Yesterday, Atlus confirmed that the widespread and best implementation of netcode, rollback netcode, will be available for Persona 4 Arena. News on the rollback netcode came directly from the Producer of the game, Kazuhisa Wada. However, the bad news is that the netcode won’t be added until Summer 2022. The Nintendo Switch version also will not receive the rollback netcode update and this may be determining factor on how well ends up selling.

Why is rollback netcode the preferred implementation, and why should it be in all fighting games that feature online gameplay? Well, that’s an extensive conversation, but the short of it is simple. Rollback netcode helps minimize lag and corrects inputs implemented. Unlike delay-based netcode, rollback will properly take inputs as they are entered and use that to predict what a player will do next. This helps remove any delay in-game.

Check out this primer video below, as it breaks down rollback netcode in a broader explanation. Though, in short, rollback netcode is what you want to see in your fighting games. So, it’s nice to see that Persona 4 Arena Ultimax will be patched once the game is released.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax includes all the original Persona 4 Arena content, a new story, dual audio (Japanese and English VO), and an expanded roster that includes new characters; Yukari Takeba, Junpei Iori, and Ken Amada from Persona 3 and Rise Kujikawa from Persona 4.
