‘Zombieland: Double Tap’ Trailer Aims High, But Can It Land?

By Sara Roncero-MenendezJuly 25, 2019

Every once in a while, a movie comes out that is better than it has any right to be. Zombieland was one of those, with a plot that seemed doomed but was ultimately inspired in how it took on the chaos of a zombie apocalypse. Will the same be said of its sequel, Zombieland: Double Tap? Judge for yourself.

The core cast is all back for the film, with Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin all reprising their roles. However, the plot in question, of Breslin’s character ditching the group to go off with a boy is…well, it feels weak.

The addition of Zoey Deutch as the ditzy Madison doesn’t seem to be helping much either. The joke of Thomas Middleditch and Luke Wilson as a mirror Eisenberg and Harrelson was funny…for the two seconds the trailer showed us. The only shining light is Rosario Dawson as Nevada, who is not here for anyone’s shit, thank you very much. More cameos are sure to appear, but hopefully they’re saving the best for the actual film.

But in good news, director Ruben Fleischer and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were responsible for the first film, so maybe they can recapture that weird, gross spark that made the first one so endearing? One can hope.

Zombieland: Double Tap premieres in theaters on October 18, 2019.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
