Sony is Aiming For Cross-Generational Play for PS4/PS5

Jim Ryan made a statement that Sony Interactive Entertainment is looking to utilize cross-generational play between PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 owners. What this means is that you will be able to carry progress over from console to console on a specific title. This technology would also make it possible for PlayStation 5 owners to play the same game online with PlayStation 4 owners.

“Whether it’s backwards compatibility or the possibility of cross generational play, we’ll be able to transition that community to next-gen,” he explained. “It won’t be a binary choice about whether you have to be ether on PlayStation 4 or next-gen to continue your friendship.

“The PlayStation community has never been bigger and it’s never been more engaged. A lot of people we brought in, in 2013, are still with us. And the amount of time and money they invest in the platform is very humbling.”

Many are wondering if this will tie into streaming as well. Sony’s plans involve making streaming so intuitive for gamers that they can accomplish this with or without a console. Having this technology in place will also help ease the transitional period every company goes through when their next-gen console hits store shelves. Sony is looking at a 3-year wind-down for the PlayStation 4 and cross-generational play will help make that wind-down period extremely smooth!
