Jason Reitman is Directing the Next Ghostbusters Movie

By Sara Roncero-MenendezJanuary 16, 2019
Untitled Jason Reitman Ghostbusters Film Ecto-1

Did you think that the Ghostbusters franchise had finally bit the big one? Not a chance – it’s coming back from the grave one last time to scare and entertain, we hope. Sony Pictures just announced that they are moving forward with another film in the franchise, and will have Jason Reitman as the director.

Jason is the son of Ivan Reitman, who directed the first two films of the franchise. He also has a screenwriting credit for the the film with Gil Kenan, who director Poltergeist (2015) and Monster House.

We even were lucky enough to get a spooky teaser trailer with the original Ghostbuster-mobile, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly:

Jason Reitman tells Entertainment Weekly that he’s excited to be taking on the project from his father, and continuing the franchise’s legacy:

“I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans. This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.”

And in case you were wondering, yes, Ivan Reitman is totally for this happening:

“It was a decision he had to come to himself. He worked really hard to be independent and developed a wonderful career on his own. So I was quite surprised when he came to me with Gil and said, ‘I know I’ve been saying for 10 years I’m the last person who should make a Ghostbusters movie, but…I have this idea.’ Literally, I was crying by the end of it, it was so emotional and funny.”

It looks like this will be a continuation of the original two film and not the 2016 all-female remake with Paul Feig, which should cause fans to breath a sigh of relief. But sadly, we don’t have anymore details than that at the moment.

The currently untitled Ghostbusters film is currently slotted to premiere in Summer 2020.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
