Weekly Outerhaven YouTube Roundup February 4, 2018

We here at the Outerhaven want you to know us not only for our passions surrounding gaming, tech, television, movies, anime, manga, etc. Every week we’re going to deliver to you a list of videos we have been checking out while cyberloafing the internet. It gives you a chance to see another side to us, one that isn’t focused on covering the latest news or reviews. While this list will be largely safe for work, we must warn against things that may incite any phobias that you may have. Enjoy!

Josh’s Pick:

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a timeless, classic anime with an opening theme song instantly recognized by anime and non-anime fans alike. So what happens when a gospel choir comes together to sing the opening? Well… needless to say at least your ears are taken to heaven!

Sara’s Pick:

Once upon a time, I was a teenaged girl, and I read Twilight. Mind you, I knew it was silly and flaky then, but it was just a fun little read to take the edge off a long day of studying for college entrance exams and AP tests. However, those silly books generated a lot of hate in the late 2000s. If you weren’t around when the backlash hit though, oh boy — the massive amount of hate generated by this franchise could have powered several stars for a century. But as Lindsay Ellis thoughtfully critiques, we as a culture were probably way too hard on the franchise for a number of reasons, and maybe its time we look back and realize that maybe the whole series was not the horrific dumpster fire we thought it was.

Aaron’s Pick:

Rooster Teeth’s ‘The Slo Mo Guys’ channel hosts some great videos, and I found this one in particular to be absolutely fascinating. Gavin uses a couple of Phantom high speed cameras to capture an old CRT TV as it draws each line of video across its screen, and even breaks out an NES to show it drawing frames of Super Mario Bros. Then, he uses a macro lens to zoom down to the sub-pixel level on both an LCD and an OLED TV, demonstrating how each pixel uses varying shades of red, green, and blue to create millions of colors.

James’s Pick:

They’re not all prefect, but the three or four winners make this good for a laugh.

That’s all for week’s roundup. Tune back in next week to see what we are sharing next!
