The CW is Developing a “Sabrina” Spinoff For “Riverdale”

By Sara Roncero-MenendezSeptember 21, 2017

It’s hard to deny to success of Riverdale, the adaptation of the Archie comics to the small screen. After the increase in popularity of Archie titles, the CW is developing its first spin off, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Many fans may not know that Sabrina the Teenaged Witch is, in fact, part of the Archie universe. This isn’t going to be like the live action show starring Melissa Joan Hart. The show would follow in the vein of the currently running comic of the same name, which is a tale of horror, dark magic, and a villain looking to get dark revenge on the Spellman family. The comic is written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who will write the show as well. Aguirre-Sacasa is the perfect fit, as he was the show runner for Riverdale and is Archie Comics’ chief creative officer. The comics themselves have some dark imagery and intense violence, so at least some portion of it would have to be modified for cable television, but hopefully not too much.

The CW’s success with spinoffs in it’s Arrowverse shows is probably what is also fueling its decision to build off the already successful show. They are also looking to try another branch out of their megahit Supernatural; Wayward Sisters that will air as a backdoor pilot sometime this season, and if well received could go into development as well.

When exactly this new adaptation would make it to the CW’s schedule is unknown, but if all goes well, we will be seeing more of the young witch and her dark tales soon. Until then, you’ll just have to keep picking up The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina at your local comic book store.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
