Shigeru Miyamoto Says Nintendo Would Rather Go In “Different Direction” Than Use AI

By Todd BlackSeptember 25, 2024
Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo

We live in confusing times both in the general sense and in the gaming sense. In the video game industry, numerous decisions are currently being made that are questionable at best. One of the biggest ones is the potential use of “generative AI” to “make games more easily,” even if they come off as bland and cost people their jobs. Not that the gaming industry has had an issue laying off people for various reasons… Anyway, with companies like Ubisoft, Amazon Games and more saying they’re hoping on the “AI Train,” many wondered if others would follow. Shigeru Miyamoto, thankfully, has an answer on the Nintendo front.

As noted by The New York Times, Shigeru Miyamoto noted that while AI is being used more by other gaming publishers and developers, Nintendo isn’t going to follow that trend:

“It might seem like we are just going the opposite direction for the sake of going in the opposite direction, but it really is trying to find what makes Nintendo special. There is a lot of talk about A.I., for example. When that happens, everyone starts to go in the same direction, but that is where Nintendo would rather go in a different direction.”

Given its past history, it’s unsurprising that The Big N would rather keep its workers and creativity than take the “easy way out” by using AI. So, once again…Nintendo wins.
