Diablo IV Guide: How to find Whispering Keys

Throughout your adventures in Diablo IV you’ll come across a Silent Chest that looks fancy, and when you try to open it, you’ll be told that it’s locked and that you’ll need a Whispering Key to open it.

To get one, you’ll need to trade for them from with the Purveyor of Curiosities, a Vendor NPC who is located in town. Of course, the Purveyor of Curiosities isn’t just going to hand the key over to you, and you’ll need to trade for it with Murmuring Obols.

It’s also worth mentioning that the Silent Chests are random, and even if you find one and reload the game, it may not be there when you come back.

The thing is, you can’t loot this key off of any named enemies. Instead, you’ll have to purchase it. To do this, you’ll need to have some Murmuring Obols. To get these, you’ll have to engage in the World Events that are scattered across the lands. You’ll know when you’re in the right place when you encounter a reddish-orange area on the ground.

After you’ve completed the quests, you’ll be rewarded with various items and some Murmuring Obols. Of course, that’s not the only way to get them, but it is the easiest and most common.

Once you have those Murmuring Obols, you must locate a Purveyor of Curiosities named Lizveth, who is located in the Desolate Highlands.

A Purveyor of Curiosities will take your Murmuring Obols and give you a chance to obtain rare items, which is similar to how the gambling system worked in Diablo 3. You give the Purveyor of Curiosities the Murmuring Obols, and you can risk the odds of getting some epic gear or random junk. However, one sure thing from a Purveyor of Curiosities is the ability to purchase a Whispering Key for 20 Murmuring Obols.

Here’s how much everything else will cost you if you’re interested.

  • Whispering Key – 20 Obols
  • Cap – 40 Obols
  • Tunic – 40 Obols
  • Gloves – 40 Obols
  • Boots – 40 Obols
  • Pants – 40 Obols
  • Ring – 40 Obols
  • Off-Hand Weapons (Focus) – 40 Obols
  • One-Handed Weapons – 50 Obols
  • Amulet – 60 Obols
  • Bow/Crossbow – 75 Obols
  • Two-Handed Weapons – 75 Obols

With your Whispering Key in hand, head back to that Silent Chest and open it! That said, I want to stress that the locations of Silent Chests are randomized. If you find one and log off, or if you get kicked off the server, chances are it will not be in the same place. So, you’ll want to keep a few Whispering Keys in your inventory, just in case you stumble across a chest.

Diablo IV was released on June 6 and is playable on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
