Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, Has Been Revealed

Elden Ring - Shadow of the Erdtree-1920x1080

Fans of Elden Ring, today is a glorious day, as Bandai Namco and Fromsoftware have revealed that they are working on an upcoming expansion for Elden Ring, called Shadow of the Erdtree. This follows the first anniversary of Elden Ring, which was released on February 25, 2022.

Rise, Tarnished, and let us walk a new path together.

According to Fromsoftware, this expansion is currently in development, so there’s no ETA on when it will be completed. Still, it’s damned exciting to know that more content is coming outside of the PVP DLC that didn’t tickle my fancy. With the reveal of this new expansion, I’m as pleased as punch. Sure, we don’t much about it, but it’s new story content, and I’m fine with that.

It’s not just the announcement that has me excited, but the key art that was also posted. In this art, we clearly see someone riding Torrent, the spectral mount that we used to get around the Lands Between, but also the rider. If you’ve spent any time looking up Elden Ring lore, you’d know that this person is none other than Miquella.

Miquella, the twin brother of Malenia… you know, that boss fight that took ages for most people to take down. Miquella, the person that you’ve heard of throughout the game, but never seen. Miquella, the very same person that was kidnapped by Mohg, Lord of blood. Yep, that person.

There was heavy indication through references and hints that we’d find out more about Miquella’s story; we just didn’t know if those were true or if it would happen. We knew he was still alive thanks to the confirmation from Sir Gideon Ofnir, who stated that “one needs to be alive to slumber.” Those words and apparent content cut from the game led many to believe that we’d see a DLC that was about Miquella, eventually. The kicker here is that Miquella is basically slumbering in a world of his design, and not the Lands Between that we were playing in.

With Shadow of the Erdtree being announced and the key art showing Miquella along with Torrent, I suppose this is finally happening. But now leads me to wonder if this is something that is post-Elden Ring, or after the game’s completion. If it’s the latter, which ending will this follow?

Just don’t expect this expansion to be released anytime soon. If we’re just being told that the expansion is in development, it could be months away. Perhaps even longer. Regardless of when it gets released, I hope Fromsoftware takes its time, as we want to be pulled back into the world of Elden Ring, and we want it done right. Oh, and it would be nice if the performance issues that are still very much present with the PC version could also be addressed with the release.

While you’re here, be sure to check out our Elden Ring review.
