PlayStation 5 Has Sold Over 30 million Units Worldwide

By Keith MitchellJanuary 5, 2023
PlayStation 5 sold over 30 million units

During Sony’s CES 2023 event, the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Jim Ryan, happily revealed that the PlayStation 5 had sold over 30 million units worldwide. In addition, it was revealed that it will be easier to purchase a PS5 from now on.

It doesn’t matter if it was because of scalpers or gamers; a system sold is a system sold. And this is a milestone, given that as of May 31st, 2022, it was announced that the console had sold 20 million consoles. So in less than a year, the PlayStation 5 sold an additional 10 million units – all that happened during the world’s silicone shortage.

Thankfully, the PlayStation 5 is becoming more commonplace in stores and can be easily purchased, compared to its availability as of November 12, 2022. The question is, did it manage to surpass the PlayStation 4 numbers during the same time frame?  Let’s take a look.

The PlayStation 5 managed to sell over 30 million units since its release date, which was November 12, 2022. That’s two years, and two months. The PlayStation 4 launched on November 15, 2013 (in North America), and managed to sell over 30 million units as of November 22, 2015.

The dates are close, but the PS4 manages to surpass 30 million units sold in nearly two months less than the PlayStation to hit that number. Regardless, that’s still impressive, given the difference in periods. We didn’t have to worry about a pandemic, silicone shortage, or recession when the PS4 was launched.

If you missed the Sony CES 2023 event, you can watch the event below. The announcement of the PS5 30 million sales can be watched at the 27:27 mark.
