New The Witcher Game in Development, Will Use Unreal Engine 5

By Keith MitchellMarch 21, 2022
New The Witcher Game

A new The Witcher game is currently in development!

While it was rumored and speculated that CD Projekt Red was working on a new The Witcher Game, today we finally have confirmation. According to CD Projekt Red’s Global PR Director, Radek Grabowski, the company is working on a new The Witcher Project. In addition, this new title will be powered by Epic Games Unreal Engine 5. They are ditching the Redengine, which is massive news for CD Projekt Red.

That said, a game this massive can easily take 5 to 6 years to develop, or possibly longer. Don’t expect to get your hands on this The Witcher title anytime soon.

Today’s announcement marks the first official confirmation of a new game in The Witcher series since the release of CD PROJEKT RED’s previous single-player, AAA RPG in the franchise — The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — which won a total of 250 Game of the Year awards and was later expanded upon with the Hearts of Stone and Blood & Wine add-ons.

The teaser image for the new game features a medallion, accompanied by the phrase A New Saga Begins. Beyond this initial confirmation of a new saga in The Witcher franchise, no further details — such as a development time frame or release date — were provided.

CD PROJEKT RED also announced that they will be moving to Unreal Engine 5 as part of the multi-year strategic partnership with Epic Games. Since The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, released in 2011, CD PROJEKT RED has used their proprietary REDengine technology to build their games. This new relationship with Epic covers not only licensing, but technical development of Unreal Engine 5, as well as potential future versions of Unreal Engine, where relevant. Developers from CD PROJEKT RED will collaborate with those from Epic with the primary goal being to help tailor the engine for open-world experiences, beginning with the development of the next game in The Witcher franchise.

As mentioned in the press release, CD Projekt Red will be working closing with Epic Games and will look to maximize its exposure with Unreal Engine 5. That said, I’m sure will read this as the next The Witcher game being an Epic Games Store exclusive, which has already been denied. At least for now, this new The Witcher title won’t be exclusive to any storefront. This makes sense, as all prior The Witcher titles sold exceptionally well on Steam and GOG. It would be silly for CD Projekt Red to lock this title down to just one storefront.

We are not planning on making the game exclusive to one storefront.

I’m psyched about the news, and I think I’ll go back and replay the last couple of The Witcher games. It’s going to be a very long wait, so why not.
