RUMOR: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is getting a Battle Royale mode

By Austin Douglas FordFebruary 12, 2020

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare may have just gotten its Season 2 release, but it looks like the team over at Infinity Ward has another release planned soon. That’s right folks, it looks like Modern Warfare is getting its own Battle Royal mode, the most surprising thing? It’s apparently free to play.

MW’s Season 2 trailer showed off fan-favorite character Ghost, before panning out showing a massive battlefield littered with explosions and action, and now, a new tab labeled Classified has appeared in the main menu of Call of Duty Modern Warfare following the Season 2 update earlier today. Then the keyart above, originally leaked on the Call of Duty Subreddit, confirming the name of the standalone.

Believed to be titled Call of Duty: Warzone, the BR mode will most likely be built off of the existing Modern Warfare framework, those weapons, perks, and so on will spotlight a somewhat different approach to Battle Royal than 2018’s Black Ops 4.

Perhaps the most perplexing, is that with the impending announcement and release of yet another COD this year, why do this now? Personally, this feels like the best way to sustain a BR mode for the franchise, and if it’s free to play, there’s no reason that each COD can’t have it listed in the main menu, and launch the standalone title from there. This way, each annual entry in the series can focus on its own campaign/multiplayer and sustain this separately moving forward.

Call of Duty’s popularity, while waning a bit, is still staggering, selling in the hundreds of millions each year.

They say everything's bigger in Texas, and Austin is no exception. Barely a 90's kid, Austin longs for the return of platformers, specifically Jak and Daxter, just don't tell him it'll never actually happen. He enjoys stand up comedy, occasionally performing in local scenes around San Antonio and Austin, and playing a myriad of different games. He also has an aggressive obsession with Superman.
