Rian Johnson is Working on a ‘Knives Out’ Sequel

By Sara Roncero-MenendezJanuary 6, 2020

If you haven’t seen Rian Johnson’s star-studded murder mystery Knives Out, then you might want to find a way to see it soon. At last night’s Golden Globes pre-party hosted by Lionsgate, The Hollywood Reporter heard from director Rian Johnson that he is working on a sequel.

The sequel with be about Daniel Craig’s Southern detective Benoit Blanc taking on another case. Johnson also said that he was aiming to make the film sometime in the next year. And yes, Craig would likely be back on board. Johnson’s producing partner Ram Bergman told The Hollywood Reporter, “Daniel [Craig] had so much fun doing it, and he wants to do more,” he said. Who the rest of the cast would be is and how far along Johnson is with the script are both, appropriately enough, mysteries.

Of course, this doesn’t mean the sequel has been greenlit yet. However, it might not be a bad investment from Lionsgate, given that the film has a $247 million box office. Sure, it didn’t win any awards at the Golden Globes from its three nominations, but there’s still a lot of awards season left to go through. Oscar nominations are even out yet! Still, we’ll just have to see if Blanc gets back to sleuthing on the big screen sometime in 2021.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
