Christopher Nolan Plays With Time Travel in ‘Tenet’

By Sara Roncero-MenendezDecember 20, 2019

Christoper Nolan has a thing for trippy visuals, most evident in his mega-hit Inception. Well, he’s bringing that energy back in a big way for his new film Tenet. This time, however, instead of playing on dreams, he’s messing with time travel.

The film stars John David Washington as the unnamed lead, who appears to be killed then brought back to life as some kind of secret agent. On his side (or so we assume), we have characters played by Robert Pattinson and Elizabeth Debicki. We also get to see Michael Caine, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Dimple Kapadia, and Kenneth Branagh running around.

So what’s the plot? Well that’s the biggest question of all. From what I can tell, it is about an agent who is killed during his training as a means of testing his loyalty. He is brought back after proving himself, and sent to stop a massive world war, though the threat is unclear. However, it becomes apparent that our main character can either manipulate time, or has the ability to sense when time is being shifted. There are several sequences of things moving backwards or of seeing ramifications of actions that haven’t happened, like bullet holes in a window fro a fight that hasn’t occurred. Time travel itself could be the threat, or it might a tool to stop armageddon. It’s a Nolan film, so anything goes.

Tenet is set to premiere in theaters on July 17, 2020.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
