Harry Potter RPG Reportedly in the Works

By Andrew AgressOctober 6, 2018
Harry Potter

While the last Harry Potter book came out over ten years ago, J.K. Rowling has been keeping the magic alive in a myriad of ways. Between a hit Broadway show (that I may have already seen twice) and a spinoff movie series, there’s a lot going on in the wizarding world. One of the latest ventures is the creation of Portkey Games. This division under Warner Brothers oversees all the games set in the universe of the Boy Who Lived. So far the studio has announced an upcoming AR game akin to Pokemon Go and released a somewhat lackluster mobile RPG. However, the studio is taking another crack at the idea of a Harry Potter RPG, so it seems.

Earlier this week, information leaked on a possible Harry Potter Role-Playing Game. Apparently, Portkey Games held a small preview of the game at a shopping mall, where one tester “forgot” to sign their Non-Disclosure Agreement. The focus tester later uploaded the footage they took to YouTube, which of course was taken down due to copyright infringement. We’ll just see if a little Harry Potter magic can bring it back, shall we? Accio Footage.

This is clearly a far cry from Hogwarts Mystery, the aforementioned mobile RPG. The graphics appear to be top notch and footage suggests a wide open world set in and around the Hogwarts castle. There’s no doubt it’s made by a major developer, with the likeliest suspects being Rocksteady and Avalanche Studios.

While sources have recently reported that yes, this is a real game, it’s still important to note that it has yet to be officially announced. Rumors swirl that the title may be “Magic Awakened” or “Magic Forever.”

Reddit user VapeThisBro also posted what appears to be the official description of the upcoming title:

Set in the 19th Century (1800’s) Wizarding World, this 3rd person open-world action RPG game centers around your character with unique abilities who has earned a late acceptance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You are a newly arrived 5th year student to Hogwarts that demonstrates a latent gift for magic with a unique ability to track and identify remnants of a pottant [sic] ancient power.

Upon arrival, strange events begin to materialize In the Forbidden Forrest and trouble begins o [sic] brew within the castle walls. Together with Professor Elezar Fig, you embark on a journey through both familiar and never before seen locations to bring to light the truth behind these mysterious occurrences.

On your quest you will craft potions, master new spells, and discover fantastical beasts. You will battle Dark Wizards, Goblins, and other supernatural enemies and uncover the truth about your destiny – the Fate of the Wizarding World lies in your hands.

One thing’s for certain. Of the three main RPG classes of Warrior, Archer, and Mage, one of these will definitely be featured prominently.

Okay, jokes aside it appears that you will actually get to choose one of eight different wizard types to play as. Hopefully soon.
