A New Tomb Raider Title Is Development

By Keith MitchellDecember 7, 2017
The rebooted Tomb Raider series has contributed to Square Enix's success.

Shorter time between the announcement and release

It’s been awhile since we last heard about rumors of another Tomb Raider (Shadow of the Tomb Raider, anyone?). But it seems that Square Enix is keen on everyone wanting another go with Lara Croft. So much that they’ve finally acknowledged that another Tomb Raider title is in production.

“A new Tomb Raider game is coming”, as stated by a tweet from Tomb Raider Twitter account.

Now what’s interesting in this is the mention of when the game will be revealed and then the actual release date. Traditionally, we get an announcement, which is followed up by the eventually release – several months to a year after. However, Square Enix seems to be taking a different route with this follow-up. Instead, we’ll have access to the new Tomb Raider title, shortly after it’s announcement.

This is really interesting, to say the least. I just hope this doesn’t mean that the new game will be episodic. Again, that’s just pure speculation on my part. However, I am wondering who is actively working on the new title. As we all know, Crystal Dynamics worked on both of the Tomb Raider reboots. It also happens that they’re also working on the new Avenger game, as part of a partnership between Square Enix and Marvel.

If CD isn’t working on it, then who could be behind the development? Nixxes, perhaps? I suppose we’ll find out when 2018 rolls around and when Square Enix is ready to talk some more.
