Unboxing the July 2017 Loot Crate – Animation

By Sara Roncero-MenendezAugust 7, 2017

Another month, another crate. And this time, we’re going more for a medium than a theme, which is interesting. The fandoms this month were Ricky and Morty, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Bob’s Burgers and Futurama – all key nerd classics. And I have got to say, overall, I am very happy with this crate. But let’s break it down:

The Figure

Ah yes, was there any doubt that the most popular fandom was going to get the figure? Even though I curse like a sailor, there’s something about figures flipping the bird that make me uncomfortable (hence why I ended up sending this one to our very own Josh). Still, I definitely think this is emblematic of the show, and it’s well designed, so I begrudge it nothing.

The T-Shirt

This design is AWESOME. Do I wish they had bigger lady sizes? Of course, but even I can’t deny that this is a great design. The color is strong but not glaring, the turtle shell design is ingenious and the cute picture of the four turtles in their cruiser is subdued. It feels like a shirt that’s trying to be more fashionable, and they hit the nail on the head.

The Pin

This pin was always going to be tough – animation is a weird concept. So they picked a popular image from Bob’s Burgers, Gene in the burger costume. While it is a cute pin for fans of the show, I don’t think it really matches the overall theme of the box, so that’s a point against it, but of the very random pins the boxes get sometimes, this is far from the worst.

Extra 1

Anyone familiar with Futurama will know Slurm, the neon green soda that is made as disgustingly as real soda. And now, you can use it as a soda/beer/canned beverage cozy to show off your super fandom, or if you’re the kind of person who uses can cozies (which I am not). They seem pretty durable though I’m not sure who exactly going to be walking around with these.

Extra 2

Yes, yes, and more yes. For Bob’s Burgers fans, there is nothing better than the book of recipes from the show. A full version is available for purchase, but getting a few choice recipes in your Loot Crate  is pretty great. Very excited to make some of these, and it is far and away my favorite thing in this crate.

Summary

It seems like a little bit of a dump crate that got “animation” as its theme only because they weren’t sure what else to call it. Still, it’s got some solid items, and it does manage to give you things that you will want to use.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
