E3 2017: Metroid: Samus Returns Dev Diary Released

By Todd BlackJune 14, 2017
Metroid: Samus Returns

One of the biggest surprises of E3 yesterday was when Nintendo unveiled Metroid: Samus Returns, a remake of Metroid II from the original Game Boy, but being rebuilt for the Nintendo 3DS. Now, Nintendo has released a dev diary detailing even more about the game.

This comes from producer Yoshio Sakamoto, who goes deep into what makes Metroid: Samus Returns so special. First up, though this is a remake of Metroid II, this game is only using that title as a base to make sure that certain elements (as in story and gameplay) are kept, but the rest is actually brand new. From new parts of the world, to weapons and abilities, and even new gameplay features, there’s a lot of new mixed in with what was found in the original.

For example, for the first time in Metroid history, you’ll have complete 360 degree aim for Samus. That’s right, you can now shoot in literally any direction you want, no restriction. Also, there’s going to be new Aeion powers that Samus can learn and use to help her on her journey. From special scans, to getting a protective lightning shield, there’s a lot of cool things Samus can do here.

And of course, the game is using much better graphics than the original title. But what fans are loving (and the devs are too) is that this is the first 2D Metroid game in 13 years. In fact, the last one they did was a remake of the original Metroid title. The team at Nintendo and MecurySteam wanted to do something special, and this was the result.

Check out the dev diary below for more details, and check out Metroid: Samus Returns when it arrives on 3DS on September 15th.
