Geeks and nerds love Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror television shows. However, these shows often fail to gain mainstream recognition. The 2015 Emmys nominees recognized geek favorites in several categories. Although there is still plenty of genre based bias in critics circles, these nominations show that the times are indeed changing.
After several years of campaigning from Orphan Black fans, Tatiana Maslany finally received a Best Actress in a Drama Series nomination. Maslany has the difficult task of playing six different characters simultaneously. This nomination signals a greater tolerance for television that breaks the conventions of acting and storytelling.
American Horror Story: Freak Show from a horror fan perspective is dominating the nominations in the Limited Series or Movie category. Horror until this series was rarely represented in any category of the Emmys. The series is up for Outstanding Limited Series or Movie and Outstanding Directing. Jessica Lange is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress, while Kathy Bates and Sarah Paulson are nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress. Denis O’Hare and Finn Wittrock are nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor.
Game of Thrones continues to represent fantasy in the Drama category. This past season’s very controversial episode “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken” as well as “Mother’s Mercy” were nominated for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series. Peter Dinklage is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor. Diana Rigg is nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress. Game of Thrones is also represented in the Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Drama Series categories.
Will these geek favorites win? American Horror Story: Freak Show may pick up a few awards in the Limited Series category because it stands out compared to the period dramas and crime procedurals in the category. Game of Thrones is up against very tough competition in Drama, especially the final season of Mad Men. While there is some hope for Orphan Black fans, Tatiana Maslany is the new kid on the block compared to the veterans of television drama in the Outstanding Lead Actress category.
