Regarding Sonic Boom…

By Keith MitchellFebruary 6, 2014

Ok, let’s talk ’bout this thing with level heads (for once).

Sonic Boom is a new show for the Cartoon Network that’s gonna have a game alongside it. Sonic, Dr. Eggman, Tails, Amy and (especially) Knuckles look totally different, with new designs based entirely off their most basic character tropes. First, to get a few things out of the way:

  1. The show is part of the Year of Sonic 2014: a ginormous marketing campaign to keep the Sonic brand fresh and noticeable, including toys. Sega tried this before back in 2003-2004 with Sonic X and the games Adventure DX, Heroes and Battle. It worked, and Sonic was back in the mainstream.
  2. The game that’s going with the show (which will be a prequel) is the third and final planned Nintendo exclusive. The Wii U version (which focuses on co-op) will be made by Big Red Button Entertainment (as their first project, it seems) and the 3DS version (which is gonna be more like Adventure, apparently) will be handled by Sanzaru Games, the guys responsible for reviving Sly Cooper recently. Sonic Team will be touching neither.
  3. SONIC BOOM WILL NOT – I REPEAT, WILL NOT – REPLACE THE MAIN SERIES. IT’LL BE AS CANON AS SONIC’S LAST FOUR SHOWS, DESPITE GETTING ITS OWN GAME.

Here’s a preview of the show.

Now, since this isn’t really geared towards Sonic’s older fans, but to little kids, I’m rather indifferent. The new designs bug me, to be sure, but since they aren’t touching the games, it’s not that big of a deal, now that I think about it. Think of it as a Modern Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Either way, everyone who is spinning the damn Cycle (Keith and Carlos, I’m looking at you) needs to chill. Let the kids have their fun. It ain’t the end of the world.
