TOKYO GHOUL ILLUSTRATIONS: zakki by Sui Ishida

By LizLizNovember 24, 2017

Here with plenty of time before the holidays is a great art book for fans of the hit horror manga series, Tokyo Ghoul!

Title: Tokyo Ghoul Illustrations: zakki
Author: Sui Ishida
Publisher: Viz Media
Language: English
Format: Hardcover
Page count: 112
Genre: Horror
Publication Date:
November 21, 2017

Do not be fooled by the modest size of this illustrated art book. While it may not be as glamorous as the massive Death Note illustrated book with slipcase, this will please any fan. Quite frankly, I don’t think a large packaging and slipcase is necessary for this book. I like books that fit easily onto shelves and this will definitely fit on the same shelf where I store my manga.

I like this book of illustrations because it contains gorgeous drawings from Sui Ishida along with his thoughts and behind-the-scenes notes. You’re not going to find these thoughts anywhere else – on one drawing, Ishida discusses using a computer program to draw a character, only to have the program crash and bring him back in time by six hours. I can only imagine the pain and frustration of losing six hours of work. I’ve only lost one or two hours to computer glitches. Furthermore, notes accompanying each illustration are great for putting readers into the moment behind each scene. Comments range from what technique was used to draw a character to how colors and lighting were used to create a particular feeling for a scene.

This book contains more than 200 full-color illustrations and never before seen sketches, making it a lot of bang for your buck this holiday season at a retail price of only $24.99. Viz Media managed to cram a lot into a smaller book, making it even sweeter for those running low on space (ahem *cough* me *cough!*)

This book is divided into four sections – graphic novel covers, young jump illustrations, additional illustrations, and an afterword.

I think any fan will appreciate this book of illustrations. And if you don’t think you’ll get this as a gift, it’s cheap enough to get it for yourself without making a significant dent in your wallet.
