There are numerous games in the video game space that have never gotten a sequel or a “true sequel” for reasons we don’t fully understand, and Super Mario RPG can be on that list. The game was an instant classic when it came out on the SNES in 1996, but it never got a follow. It did get the spiritual successor deal via the Paper Mario franchise, but the two are different in various ways and fans have wondered not only why it took so long to get a remake, but why we never got a true sequel.
Thankfully, the director of the SNES title, Chihiro Fujioka agrees with you! He revealed to Minnmax that he WANTS to do a sequel to the title!
“So, in my career, I’ve been involved in a lot of games and you know, I would really like my final one to be another Mario RPG game, if possible,” Fujioka said. “I think Mario & Luigi is cool but I would like to go back and create a Mario RPG where you’re only controlling Mario.”
You hear that, Nintendo? Hire him! And in the meantime, check out our review of the Super Mario RPG remake!
