Tears of the Kingdom Leads Nintendo Domination of Japan’s 2023 Sales Chart

By Todd BlackJanuary 12, 2024
Legend of Zelda, Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Music

We’re almost through the first month of 2024, but it’s clear that people aren’t done talking about 2023 just yet. And in the case of Japan, some interesting pieces of news have come out on that front. Specifically, Famitsu dropped the top ten best-selling physical games of 2023. And not only did The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom top that list with almost 2 million physical copies sold, but Nintendo DOMINATED the list by locking up every single spot in that top ten.

You can see the entire top ten list via the tweet below.

Top 10 Selling Games of 2023 in Japan from Famitsu

1) Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – 1,929,603
2) Super Mario Bros. Wonder – 1,549,401
3) Pikmin 4 – 1,119,027
4) Pokémon Scarlet/Violet – 907,432
5) Momotaro Dentetsu World – 795,681
6) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 617,223
7) Kirby's… pic.twitter.com/Q34sZGfMbw

As Stealth notes in a follow-up tweet, these are JUST the physical sales, and thus, if you include the digital sales, it’s at least 30% higher, if not more. When it comes to games like Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros Wonder, it’s fair to say that they’re both likely over 2 million in sales in Japan. But still, the fact that Nintendo ran the entire gauntlet in 2023? It shows how many big games they had during the year and how much Japan wanted to get them.
