Manga Review: The Devil Is A Part-Timer! High School!

Title:  The Devil Is A Part-Timer! High School! Volume 1

The Devil Is A Part-Timer! High School! is a spin-off of the popular novel series featuring the Devil King and the Hero that we all know and love. In this version, the two characters are reincarnated as high school students who must navigate their way through student life. Chiho is in this as well and just like in the regular series, she has a huge crush on Maou.

Volume 1 focuses on Maou’s desire to rise to the top of the high school. Similar to his obsessive self in the light novel, Maou the high school student thinks that if he gets elected as President of the Student Council he will control the school and from there, he can dominate the world. He takes on a variety of tasks like helping out at the school store to please teachers and gain popularity amongst the students.

Emi Yusa is a transfer student (like Maou) and she comes in with fists up. I mean this almost literally – she calls out Maou as the Devil King upon her arrival and claims that she will slay him. Since this is a high school setting, Emi the Hero’s rhetoric is misinterpreted as a crush and Chiho attempts to set Maou and Emi up. Chiho and Emi seem to follow Maou everywhere, leading to trouble that reveals Maou’s kindness as a human. On a field trip, Emi makes a careless mistake and falls from a cliff and her nemesis, the Devil King Satan, throws his human life into the wind as he makes an attempt to save her. After this, Chiho, Maou, and Emi realize they’ve been separated from their class and must find their way back… together as a team.

Final Word:

This spin-off is a great twist on the series as the characters have kept all of their personality traits – the only difference is the setting. Maou and his loyal servant are not living in a dumpy apartment in Volume 1, they’re now living in a janitor’s closet in the high school! Ashiya works as a janitor in exchange for free room and board in the janitor’s closet. This isn’t really too far off from his domestic house-wife role in the original series! Emi Yusa is also just as cantankerous as her counterpart in the light novel. Chiho remains as enthusiastic as ever and continues to misinterpret Emi and Maou’s relationship just as she did in the light novel series.

This manga is fast-paced and great to read, especially if you are familiar with the series already. I really suggest fans check out this spin-off since it is a great twist that holds onto the main elements that make the series so enjoyable. I am definitely interested in where this will go in Volume 2.
