Manga Review: Emma Volume 3

The painful wait for volume 3 of Emma is finally over. After the incredible cliffhanger where Emma is unexpectedly and briefly reunited with William, life is supposed to return to normal when the maid returns to the Haworth estate; however, the waitstaff have plenty of questions for her. Emma arrives from London noticeably changed. She is happier and more talkative – a trait that sticks out to those who have been distrustful of her since her arrival. She’s also dressed in finery unbecoming of her station in life. As a result, she finds herself bombarded with questions about London, her previous life there, and the mysterious man who started sending her letters. Despite the dynamic changes, Emma does her best to live life as a hardworking and cheerful maid until one day some unexpected events uproot and threaten her very life.

Final Word:

It is obvious Kaoru Mori is an anglophile – all of the concerns I had with the social structure of the book were explained in this volume. I can now continue reading this series without worry that this will just be a cute historical romance without any historical truth about Victorian life. Mori provides readers with a deep examination of the Jone’s family’s history, revealing details behind the absent Mrs. Jones and Mr. Jone’s determination to marry his children ambitiously. Furthermore, we get to learn more about Viscount Campbell and his true nature when William attempts to break his engagement to Miss Campbell. Not only does the Viscount appear to be a dishonest person who keeps feminine company on the side, but he may just be tied to the twisted events at the country Haworth estate that have Emma’s fate in the balance.

This volume filled a void in my life that was waiting to be fulfilled after the bittersweet ending of volume 2. Now I have to bite my nails and wait on the edge of my seat to find out what happens next. If you’re not reading Emma yet, I don’t know what you’re waiting for. This series is beautifully packaged with a two-sided dust jacket and contains a wonderful story.
