Manga Review: ULTRAMAN Volume 3

Title: Ultraman Volume 3

Ultraman Volume 3 is definitely more of the same. The first portion of the book is spent following the uncertain Shinjiro who headcases throughout the entire volume. In the meantime, Moroboshi takes him to a secret alien city to meet an informant who may have information about the mysterious serial killer. Trusting Shinjiro’s safety to the informant, Moroboshi disappears into the city. The informant tricks a massive alien ‘friend’ into fighting with Shinjiro – but the alien quickly realizes the nervous teenager is no ordinary human. Eventually Moroboshi returns to collect Shinjiro and they return to Earth. As the volume progresses, we learn that this senior man doesn’t like Shinjiro and doesn’t care for the idea of forcing him to become Ultraman. It seems that Moroboshi has his own plans for Ultraman…

Final Word:

I found it very difficult to get into this volume. In fact, it was rather painful because I felt as if characters were scattered about between the various small segments running parallel to the main story. There is a lot going on in this volume without too much explanation. The only thing that is easy to follow is the building tension between Moroboshi, who is supposed to be a good guy, and Shinjiro. I imagine this will all unravel and play out in the next few volumes in what I hope is a clear and concise manner. I don’t hate this volume, but it certainly took me a few sit-downs to read it from front to back. I can’t say I’m thrilled to continue following Ultraman, but the last few pages really did intrigue me. I’m going to give volume 4 a shot and hope that it sways my opinion in a good way.
