Indie Arcade Racer SPGP Super Polygon Grand Prix Looks to Recreate That Virtua Racing Feeling

SPGP Super Polygon Grand Prix is an upcoming arcade racer that pays homage to several arcade racers from the past, including Virtua Racer, and Outrun. I hadn’t heard about this game before, not until I saw the title developed, Rozz Games, making a post on Twitter. As soon as I saw it, I followed the developer, Rozz Games, and also made sure to wishlist the game on Steam.

While I haven’t had the opportunity to play the game yet, based on what I’ve seen, I’m genuinely excited. I had a great time playing Sega’s Virtua Racer in arcades and on the 32X home version. It stands out as one of Sega’s stronger racing titles, although it didn’t quite achieve the same level of popularity or acclaim as some of Sega’s other arcade racers.

Rozz Games is committed to releasing SPGP Super Polygon Grand Prix on Steam as an early access title. Their plan is to continuously enhance the game by adding features, refining gameplay, and striving for excellence. Initially, early access will include local couch co-op, online leaderboards, and a progression mode.

I'm not EA im not Codemasters, Im not Ubisoft, I'm a broke bloke in my 40s making a game. Its close but I'm excited and REALLY scared. Thank you for your support x. https://t.co/xbctWrcits pic.twitter.com/oEmvLRaIeh

SPGP Super Polygon Grand Prix is set to hit the track on Steam by the end of July 2024. If you’re a fan of classic racing games like Virtua Racing, Outrun, and many others from the 80s and 90s arcade era, you might want to add SPGP Super Polygon Grand Prix to your wishlist and give it a spin upon release.

Growing up in the 80s and 90s, arcade racers were a big part of my gaming experience. Those days spent in arcades and playing on home consoles shaped my love for racing games. Nowadays, while we occasionally see indie games, the landscape has changed. Games like Forza Horizon are impressive in their own right, but they lean towards open-world arcade-sim racing, which isn’t quite the same nostalgic experience.

I crave an arcade racer where I can zip around a circuit track, pushing the limits of speed without worrying about physics or realism. Fans of games like F-Zero, Top Gear, Daytona USA, Cruis’n USA, and Ridge Racer understand the exhilaration I’m talking about. There’s a unique thrill to those racing experiences, but it seems like developers have moved away from that style.

That’s why I’m thrilled to see indie developers embracing this niche. With SPGP Super Polygon Grand Prix, I’m eagerly anticipating its release later this month. Until then, keep an eye out for Super Polygon Grand Prix page on Steam.
