External Storage, Real Names and More Coming with Xbox One System Update in June

With the next system update coming in June, we’re thrilled to announce two of your most-requested features will be here soon: external storage support and real names for identifying your friends.

Since our launch of Xbox One last year, we’ve been hard at work to continue making Xbox One the best destination for all your gaming and entertainment experiences. Because of the way we’ve designed the Xbox One platform, we’ve been able to continually improve the product for you with a more regular cadence of system and app updates. Your feedback for what you want most has been our guiding light for these updates, and will continue to be as we work to bring the fan-favorite features you want most.

Real names and external storage support are just the beginning for June. With this update, Xbox Live is being improved in a number of ways as we announced last week. You will also be able to take advantage of great new SmartGlass features, including OneGuide and Universal Remote Control, select an account for automatic sign-in, and for Xbox One owners in Canada and Europe, get access to OneGuide and more TV, SmartGlass and voice features.

Easily Increase Games Capacity with External Storage Support
It couldn’t be easier to increase your storage capacity of games and apps with the external storage support features we’re bringing in June. Your Xbox One system will soon support up to two external hard drives at once. Simply plug in your 256 GB or larger USB 3.0 external hard drive and once formatted, copy and move games, apps and game add-ons to increase your storage capacity at home.

This is also a great way to take your content to a friend’s house and get straight into a game directly from an external drive. You’ll need to sign in to Xbox Live if you’ve purchased your content digitally or insert a disc to verify your game ownership when you take your content on the road. The great benefit here is there’s no need to wait to re-download your game and all the DLC. With external storage support in June, you can also choose to copy full games and all of the associated content in one easy step.

Real Names Makes it Easier to Identify Friends
With Xbox One you can have 1,000 friends and infinite followers, but as these lists grow it can become increasingly more difficult to remember the people you know by their gamertag alone. Now with real names feature you can recognize people on your friends list and more easily discover people you already know who are on Xbox Live.

Most importantly, we heard your feedback that to make this most useful you need full control. You’ll be able to share with all your friends, a subset of your choosing, friends of friends or none at all. The choice is yours. Also, your name doesn’t show up in games, and you can change your settings any time from your profile and when adding new friends.

SmartGlass Provides Access to full OneGuide and Universal Remote Control, Pin Reordering and More
We’ve made a ton of changes to your SmartGlass app for Xbox One. After getting great feedback from our SmartGlass beta, we’re thrilled to be bringing the entire OneGuide experience and Universal Remote Control to SmartGlass. Now in supported markets you can view all of your TV listings on your SmartGlass device and set and view your favorite channels and app channels on your smart phone, tablet or PC. With the Universal Remote Control, you can also easily switch channels, set new recordings and select and control recorded content from your DVR. Another great companion feature now in SmartGlass is pin reordering. With the touch of your finger you can easily organize your pins in categories or favorites based on your preferences and have those changes refresh to your console.

Other improvements to SmartGlass will help you stay current on what you and your friends are up to, even when you’re away from your console. We’re bringing hero stats and activity feed front and center, and adding more ways for you to compare achievements via SmartGlass whether you’re on a friend’s profile or viewing a game from the activity feed. Just like on the console, you can choose to get notifications on your smart phone, PC or tablet when a favorite friend signs into their console or starts broadcasting a game. For many devices, you can even choose to start watching the broadcast wherever you are.

Expanded TV and OneGuide Soon Available in More Markets
The TV and OneGuide features we began sharing with select Xbox Live members in April will be available in June to everyone in Canada, UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy. The update will bring OneGuide, alongside Favorites and App Channels, for people in these markets who have their TV connected to Xbox One via HDMI-in. Additional features in these markets include Kinect voice commands for controlling your set-top box and other AV equipment. We’ve also updated TV and OneGuide settings to provide better power management and control of your devices and improved compatibility with more devices.

New Gold Membership Benefits, Access to Apps for All and More
With this update, you’ll find a new hub in Xbox One for exploring all of the great benefits available to Xbox Live Gold members, including Games with Gold and Deals with Gold. Also, with the Xbox Live Gold changes announced last week, shortly after the Xbox One system update becomes available in June all Xbox Live members will be able to access popular gaming and entertainment apps without a Gold membership.

Finally, we’ve made it possible for you to choose an account for automatic sign-in on your Xbox One – another much-requested feature from fans like you.

Coming soon, these features will be available to members previewing Xbox One system updates as they help us work through final improvements. This system update will become available to the full Xbox One community in June. We look forward to hearing what you think and keep the feedback coming.

System Update, Xbox Live, Xbox One By Larry Hryb, Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson

hmm…can you remove/insert the external HDD safely while the Xbox in on, or in standby?

    • ImTheMetalLord

I doubt it. Worse thing you can do to any memory that plugs into any computer.

    • Stoney

      Probably have an ‘eject’ button

  • Stijn Raedts

Can’t you guys implement microphones in the X1′s controller? It would allow for people to use voice commands (which can be very usefull at times). But don’t want to spend 100 bucks for the whole camera kinect for games.

    • Dylan

Or maybe using a chat headset through the controller might be a solution to that.

      • Ryan Spooner

While I prefer Kinect myself, your suggestion of having to wear a headset just to say the occasional command to your console does seem kind of awkward Dylan.

        • Dylan

True. It’s different for me I guess because I use a headset all the time, for the virtual surround sound and party chat.

          • Stijn Raedts

Same here. But I tend to switch from surround speakers to my turtle beach headset on my 360 a lot.

      • Stijn Raedts

For example. But microphones in the head of a controller also works when you are playing sound from your speakers. It would also benefit from being closer to your mouth.

    • Chad_7Eleven

That would mean buying an extra $60 controller anyway – in my opinion might as well spend the extra $40 on Kinect.

Other thought would be to allow plug and play support for USB microphones, or release a USB X1 microphone for $20.

      • Stijn Raedts

You van never have enough controllers :)

    • IRB

I believe the Kinect camera has quite a bit of hardware and processing on-board that does this stuff before passing the info it to the console, so doing it via a mic wouldn’t work I don’t think unless you are then using the X1′s power to process this info.

      • Stijn Raedts

Not for voice commands. Those take little processing power.

  • Ryan Spooner

Can you comment on the TV/OneGuide features for the UK please? Have you partnered with Sky to get their program information into OneGuide? Also when watching something on my Sky HD set top box, can I say “Xbox Pause” and it will pause that recording, just like it does when watching a Blu-Ray?

Also please please please can you hurry up and get 3D support into your Blu-Ray player app? I have around 15 3D Blu-Rays, but have to keep my old Sony Blu-Ray player plugged into to the TV to watch them. I’d prefer to do away with this play and use Xbox One exclusively.

    Thanks.

    • digitallife

Would love to see Sky as an american app. They’ve got some good shows.

    • IRB

Yup, the Sky program info should appear in the OneGuide. I use it currently on Virgin Media and it is all there, I believe Sky is the same.
Yes, you can use voice play/pause/fast forward/rewind etc while playing for your Sky box :)

    • nitraMBr

I have sky and already have the oneguide for sky as I am in the beta program. It works pretty well, pause, play, fast forward etc all work (both on recordings and live tv). You can set favourites and change channel with voice, however this is still quite sketchy at the moment, but this will only improve.

I am still waiting for the kinect to recognize that I am walking out of the room and pause blue ray, game or sky automatically :) that would be really cool.

  • Kyle Parlane

Voice commands for New Zealand any time soon?

  • http://xxkarzaxx.tumblr.com/ Karza

Now all we need is a notification when party chat turns itself off. Many a time I’ll be chatting with my friends and they’re not in party chat anymore and I have to text them because they don’t know they’ve lagged out.

Not all of us have party chat snapped at all times. We’d rather have Titanfall take up as much screen space as possible.

Also, since the latest update, sometimes when I say “Xbox snap party” it thinks I want to snap IE.That’s getting a little bothersome.

  • Chad_7Eleven

The May update fixed #1 on my list: ability to adjust the volume of snapped apps.

This update addresses #2: External Storage.

Knowing Games with Gold is coming to X1 great news.

Has been a great couple of months for Xbox One.

As an owner of both an X1 and PS4 since launch, I have friends asking me which one I would recommend. While personally I always felt it was the X1, it wasn’t until this past month that I felt comfortable recommending it to people over the PS4.

  • http://www.Soundcloud.com/Stream-Of-Consciousness Stream Of Conscious

Finally! I had to delete my first game yesterday in order to fit “Wolfenstein” onto my HDD so this is much needed. Any word on when those of us in the preview program can expect the update to roll out?

I absolutely love the Xbox One and what I consider an amazing system just keeps getting better every month. I still have a few things I would like to see happen but you guys are steady knocking items off the list. A few important (to myself at least) things I would like to see implemented are:

    1) Please give us the ability to rip music to our HDD’s like the OG Xbox and 360 did since launch..I am missing this feature immensely. Streaming music/video from our computers would be nice as well but having music ripped onto my HDD is essential to me.
2)I really would love a notification for when our controllers are about to die, I cannot tell you how many times I’ve had one die on me in the middle of a match..it is beyond frustrating.
3)Please bring back our gamer profile settings/preferences (whatever they were called on 360) so that every game I play will automatically have inverted controls, etc.
4)I do believe I read somewhere that you guys are trying to make digital pre-loading happen, this would make me very happy. Also allowing me to play the game I bought at midnight my time instead of having to wait till midnight Pacific time would be great. Mmmm kay.
5)Fix the issue where if you have Netflix snapped and finish an episode you do not have to go back to full screen to select the next one (hell let us navigate it in snapped mode as well).

Those are a few of the most important ones off the top of my head. I’m sure there are more things that would make the experience better but I digress.Keep up the great work! Xbox One is my favorite piece of tech created thus far.

    • PawnSacrifices

Agreed. Xbox just keeps getting better. I’m at a loss at why ppl get upset by frequent updates, I mean it’s not like you have to pay for it or write the code yourself :P
      PS.
I want (4) from your list! Digital pre-loads!!!

    • ryder4life22187

it would be nice if either company let us rip of music into FLAC format.

      • https://twitter.com/Ganon255 Ganon255

        or any lossless format

      • beardyman3218

That would be great, they could also then allow flac to be streamed from a media server whenever that dnla update is coming.

  • Charles

I must say that the Xbox team has been very good with putting out quality updates quickly since the launch of Xbox One. They really have. The Xbox One has grown into a really great user experience. So I say congratulations and thanks to the Xbox team.

  • Aussiesloth

I’m so glad I stuck with Xbox One this console gets better and better I like how MS listening to there gamers.

  • ryder4life22187

Major should invest in better HDD’s. I know Seagate had alot of issues with 2TB drives and higher going out on people in a years time and sometimes less.

  • CAPP360

Please bring an update that allows me to turn on my XB1 with full screen TV.

  • Frisky

If they can pull a decent E3 this year, they’d be 100 miles the opposite direction they were a year ago. Keep it up Xbox

  • http://www.trueachievements.com/Samba+P.htm Andreas

Will we be able to play media from our hard drives? It’s the last thing I need before I can get rid of my Blu-ray player.

    • Death Dealer

Nope, not yet. But drives containing those files (when supported) won’t support the games, add-ons and apps. It will be one, not both.

  • Death Dealer

So the 16TB limit I heard turns out to be true as well. More limits MS?

    • evilfangs .

Are people really going to use 16TB on digital games / DLC though?

      • Death Dealer

The same was said when the Xbox 360 launched and games were about 50MB and the drives were 20/60GB, which back then could hold 400/1200 games.
I own about 500 digital games on Xbox 360 now and can’t figure out where to put them because of these artificial limitations and game sizes having increased dramatically.
On the Xbox One most games are under 50GB, so that would be about 320 games in its current state, but we all know games won’t remain under 50GB now that such an amount of storage is available.

        • Stoney

How many of us play 500 games at any one time? Game management? Begin downloading your next while you play the current.

          • Death Dealer

Of course, but that’s not the point. Would you like to redownload a 200GB game with current download speeds? Game sizes may have increased a thousand fold, download speeds haven’t.
This is where MS’s previous (DRM) model, with every disc in essence being a downloadable game, would have been great.

          • evilfangs .

No game is 200GB though and won’t be for quite some years, and by then download speeds would have caught up.

Here in the UK you can get 150mbps download speeds, a state in the US is trying out 1000mpbs with Google fibre. Places like Romania are easily doing 200+ mbps now.

Just this year a test was done here in the UK, London to Ipswich ( 250 miles ) with speeds of 1.4 terabits per second, the tests were performed on existing fibre lines already installed.

I only just got fibre in my area and am already hitting 75mbps, and that’s without the whole town having fibre lines installed.

          • Death Dealer

Then you’re lucky as that’s definitely not the case for everyone.

          • Nick Peck

The US’s standard internet speeds are 30th in the world while we are in the top 4 for internet costs. I love paying $60 a month for 1mb up and 24mb down… I refuse to pay more. Now if that bill doesn’t pass in congress we are going to get killed in speed vs. costs even more so (that net neutrality bill)..

If that gets messed up I think we will see a huge shift in how people use the net because if you use “X” amount of data per month you are going to pay sky high prices to not get throttled. Then there is the possibility of them throttling sites that don’t pay the providers (say facebook pays, your speed to FB will be fast, if ign doesn’t pay, you will have a nice long load time).

I’m not a tinfoil hat type of person at all, but reading what can happen if things go south is kind of scary. I cut the cord so I stream a lot of stuff (Netflix / web / Xbox video / Amazon) for tv and that will kill my viewing habits, not to mention I download a lot of games which adds to the usage.. a lot. It’s going to be interesting to see what happens.

          • evilfangs .

Seems like America has it bad with internet lol.

I pay £35 a month for 75 down and 30-40 up with no usage data and I don’t get my speeds throttled.

£15 of that goes towards phone line rental and because of the provider I’m on I have to pay for phone line rental to get my fibre broadband. If I was with Virgin Media which is the best broadband we could get here in the UK I could get just fibre broadband without having to pay for line rental for £37 a month but that £37 gets me up to 152mb speeds.

          • Stoney

Personally 200GB isn’t too bad for me, but I understand that isn’t the point here.
All I’m saying is, yes people may have lots of games, but the absolute necessity to store it all locally isn’t really there.

      • beardyman3218

Not to mention you can’t buy HDDs bigger than 4tb at retail, some select stores sell 6tb drives but they cost £400!

        • evilfangs .

Got to be stupid to pay £400 for a hard drive. That is the same as an Xbox one or a PS4.

          • beardyman3218

Definitely, I’ll probably just get a 4tb drive western digital are great hdds and they offer 4tb hdds for around £110 and if that gets full I’ll either buy a 2nd one or just uninstall some games because it will take a while to fill it.

      • Shakeslikecrazy

Yes, this gen, very likely as so many are going digital only and DLC will get larger and larger.

    • Shakeslikecrazy

      I hope not!

    • Xenokai

16TB is plenty for the lifecycle of the console, 1TB is ALOT lol 16TB is just over doing it. lol Also i think the reson its 16TB is because thats the limit of that file system. You prob can use 2 16tb drives which would be even more insane.

      • Shakeslikecrazy

I don’t know, but NTFS allows much larger volumes than 16TB, unless they use the smallest cluster size.

        • beardyman3218

Can you even buy 16tb HDDs? The biggest I have seen in retail here in the UK was 6tb and that cost £400.

    • http://summified.com/ Ry L

You could, you know, swap drives around. I doubt you’ll need more than 16TB plugged in at all times.

    • Mike

Bit pointless arguing about a 16TB limit when its neither here or there because you cant get anything bigger than 6TB disk.

  • Andrew Titmuss

What countries is the new Universal Remote Smartglass feature available in? Please have Australia….

    • Will Muscat

The smartglass beta has it (I’m in Australia) I suggest however grabbing the media remote, works awesome.

      • Andrew Titmuss

Awesome. What devices can it control for you?

        • Will Muscat

I can only 100% say my TV as I have nothing else hooked up to it at this point. It appears to work for whatever your console is synced with.

          • Andrew Titmuss

Awesome, thanks for the info! Really can’t wait for the update then.

  • http://people.ign.com/ltsjoemama ltsJoeMama

Microsoft, you should bring back Brute Force!
Anyone else remember that game? Good times.

    • Some guy

I still have the game, wasn’t exactly great but it was fun + co-op.
But there are many games I’d prefer to have before a Brute Force.

  • Gazza!!!

Power Star golf is currently free, just downloaded it.

    • Some guy

I’d love to download it on the website but we still can’t without a credit card.
And I don’t own a xbone. (would have been to keep it in my backlog until I do)

      • Gazza!!!

        I wouldn’t bother.

        • Peter

agreed We are talking about a game that was what originally 20 if i recall when released. Was like 15 on sale and by now should be like 10 bucks at this point. Break the game up into parts call it free with addons for sale. Total is 25 bucks now; more than the game was originally at release

Like the morons think we can’t count and/or use our brains. This game should be hitting bargain bin at 10 and under by now either that or part of gwg

          • Michael Burden

You can still get the complete package for $20, just like at launch. They just added options – a generous demo (similar to what they did with Killer Instinct) and an option to buy courses individually at a slightly higher price than the full package.

    • beardyman3218

Is it on sale or an error?

      • Peter

Believe its on purpose they broke it up it seems and are selling parts of it seperate ala ki. So glorified demo huh? Must not be selling as well as they had hoped it appears

        • beardyman3218

Oh now I don’t want to download it as much, I don’t want this to become the norm otherwise games will end up like android and iPad games.

          • Peter

Agreed they must think we are morons who go wow free game and cant see what this ploy is sell it at ten whole and stop this bs

          • Nick Peck

Sad thing is, is that most people don’t realize it and do it. Games make a ton of money this way and is worth them doing (the dev that is). Sure some people see through the f2p but most don’t. It simply works, and works well.

I’ll play the base f2p but I never spend any money on it unless I really love it… which hasn’t happened to me yet with a f2p game.

      • Gazza!!!

I think its moving into the f2p model but I cant check out what’s available on it just yet.

        • Shakeslikecrazy

Yes, it’s F2P. The courses are more expensive now separately too. Bah!

          • Michael Burden

You can still get the full package for $20.

      • Peter

So 4 parts of it at 5.99 for each part so what its like 25 bucks total isnt that more than how much it was recently . Shrewd guys really shrewd. Breaking it into parts to make more with pretending its free.

        • Gazza!!!

Lol that’s horrible. Going to delete it now.

          • Michael Burden

You can still get the full game for $20. They just added a free version which is comparable to what they did with Killer Instinct. Think of it more as a demo that saves your progress towards the full purchase.

          • Peter

thing is this version actually costs 5.99 per part so in reality it actually costs more to go this route. This game shouldn’t be more than 10 bucks by now but are trying to be sneaky and go the f2p route. No thanks powercrap golf. 20 or 25 bucks its still grossly overpriced come back to 10 or so and we can talk. They really take us for fools.

          • Michael Burden

The option to get the whole game for $20 is still there, thus making your point moot. The only thing changed is now there is effectively a demo and the option to get courses individually as well as the total package just as before. You are making a big deal out of nothing.

          • Mr&Mrs Ninja

hmmm… think i’ll download now. Thanks mike for putting it in a more positive way.

    • Paul Lelowicz

Just saw this and I am FURIOUS! I am NOT buying anymore new release content from Xbox Live. I paid for Powerstar Golf and Spartan Assault, both are or will be free. I bought a Day One console and got hosed with the premature price drop and free Titanfall and Forza bundles. I understand MS is trying to play catch up with Sony, but I am tired of paying for it.

      • Gazza!!!

I wouldn’t worry about this going f2p as you will end up paying more for the same content you bought originally. The dlc is free with 250 GS tho.

      • http://socialsteak.com/ Stephen Robinson

You didn’t get hosed, you just think you’re entitled to more than you are.

      • Corey Wisla

Powerstar is free to play, you pay more for it if you buy the whole thing in that model then you did when you buy it. If you did any research at all, games for gold was coming eventually, Halo Spartan was almost a gimme that it would be one of the first free games since it was one of the first digital games available. It won’t be long for Lococycle I am sure since that one is early and a first party title as well.

For the other games you mentioned, it is pretty clear that sort of thing will happen. If you watch your flyers, and note that MS has announced a deals for gold project in addition to games for gold, most games will have some sort of sale in 1-2 months. The same thing will happen with Watch_Dogs as well, you can almost bet it will be in a Christmas bundle. When you buy at release, you are paying to play it first, all games go on sale or get put in deals eventually.

  • Ali Mokrane

Can someone please clarify this for me:

    - Does the installation of games to the external HDD apply to both Downloadable and Disc-based games?

If the answer to the above is YES then:

    - For disc-based games, once installed on your HDD, do you still have the option of just taking the HDD and playing the installed disc-based game on another console as long as you sign in to Xbox Live WITHOUT the disk being inserted?

I think the above two points are very important and if true, that’s a massively good feature!

    • Satsumo

      First answer is YES
Second answer is NO – if you installed a game on the HDD via a disc then you must have that disc inserted into the X1 that you plug the HDD into.
(Otherwise you could just sell the disc and carry on playing the game!!!)
A disc game installed will ALWAYS need the disc in order to verify you (still) own the game.

      • Ali Mokrane

Thanks but regarding the second answer:

Yes you can sell your HDD to someone else to play the games on it but you would have to sell your gamertag too as the games on the HDD are only attached to your gamertag!

I still think what I asked is possible with disc-based games and it would be a feature that sets Xbox One apart from the PS4 as in all cases, you do need to be signed in to live to verify your downloadable or disc based games anyway…

        • Satsumo

No you’re mistaken….you ALWAYS need the disc if that is how you bought/installed it – otherwise you could sell the DISC (not HDD) and still keep your Gamertag and HDD and keep playing the game (without the DISC that you have sold).

          • Ali Mokrane

I see your point now, I missed the fact that the owner of the disc and the gamertag can still install the game to the HDD and sell it and be able to play.. Fair enough.

          • Peter

Trust me ms thought that through and isn’t about to let people install either disc copies nor digital copies and not think it through carefully in regards to people spreading copies around. As far as the hd support yeah seriously did anyone believe ms wouldn’t think that through? You still need a disc for physical games to work even if all it does is just do a quick cd check.

MS might be foresighted when it comes to alot of things but not when it comes to piracy and loss of potential profits.

If you have a disc version and install it it will ALWAYs require a disc to play and it should. If it didnt people would use that to keep games they no longer owned. I think its fine the way they have it, if you dont want a disc buy it digitally.

    • Dontcare181

Always buy a disc, If you go digitally when MS pulls the plug on any console that game is gone for good… years from now you can always play E.T. on your Atari 2600.. I just bought a movie from my cable provider only to find out I only own it for 10 years..

      • AaronionRings

Or not. I’m planning on going digital only with the Xbox One aside from certain games (Like Halo) or collectors editions. Aside from that, digital only. The benefits outweigh the possibility of the plug being pulled on us being able to play our games at some point in the unforeseen future.

All I need to do for my games is tell my Xbox to play them and I’m playing them right away. If you stick with physical then you have to get up, eject the disc, find the box for that disc, put it away, find the game you want to play, put that in the console, put the box away THEN you can can get back to your console and play the game. If you want to play something else then you have to do that all over again.

That’s fine, it only takes a minute at the most but it’s tedious. If the option to go digital is there and you’re fine with going digital then there’s no good reason to avoid it.

If you worry about the future too much, you can’t enjoy the present.

Does anyone know if the External HDD feature will be coming to the Xbox360 as well?

    • Greg

Good question Xenmic, my 360 drive is in a constant state of being full and I just hate deleting stuff.

      • Shakeslikecrazy

Same here. I truly hate it as I’m stuck on ADSL when I have to redownload.

      • Nick Peck

I have two old laptop hd’s that I turned into external drives that are filled with 360 downloads as well as a 32gb usb flash drive lol. I wish they would have allowed more space for the 360 like everyone else, such a pain to have 3 devices plugged into it to see everything I have on the system.

    • shinji

I think you will just have to use flash drives.

    • Xenokai

You can already use external HDD with the 360. Just with a max format of 32gb. IMO id rather them focus on next gen for now on for updates tho.

      • http://www.carincress.com/ Xenmic

A HDD is not the same as a jump drive or data stick and I’m already using usb sticks. My question was about HDD not what is already available to use.

  • http://Www.mylifewithgaming.wordpress.com/ Mitchell Hall

This is a great update guys. I’m extremely pleased that the external hard drive support is here, I had to delete a game in order to install wolfenstein on Tuesday so this comes at a perfect time. What really sucks though is the fact that the external hard drive needs to have its own power supply. My entertainment center is so jam packed with things as it is. I built my entertainment center from the ground up back in December to have all cables hidden at all times. I’ve gotta say the xbox one with its power brick and kinect made this quite challenging, and now having to add another piece of equipment is going to make it worse.

I am totally nitpicking right now, I know it. I’m very glad to have external HD support. I’m excited for the smart glass universal remote for sure. I really hope it will pick up my amp/receiver as its the complete hub of my entertainment center. All my devices(ps4,xbox one, xbox 360, fiberop) pass into it.

On another note, wolfenstein is awesome! I’m very surprised it’s as good as it is and super glad I picked it up. totally making sure I have it beat by Tuesday because from the leaked footage I’ve seen of watch dogs, it’s incredible !!

    • Michael Burden

You can use USB powered drives – one of the models that the Major is using is USB powered. I don’t know where you got the idea it had to be an externally powered drive as many have already posted that it is not a requirement. You have nothing to nitpick about here.

      • http://Www.mylifewithgaming.wordpress.com/ Mitchell Hall

That’s actually not true. it’s been confirmed that the external hard drive has to be USB 3.0 and it also has to have an external power source.

        • Michael Burden

Then care to explain how Major Nelson is using fully USB powered drives on his system? That should be all the proof you need that you have bad information.

    • Gazza!!!

You should easily beat it by then. I have just finished the game including all achievements today. Takes about 15 to do it all. Now bring on Watch Dogs.

  • Ross Kemp

So is it only branded MS HDD or any generic ( cheaper ) brand external memory ?

    • Michael Burden

Any USB 3.0 USB drive that is greater than 256GB in size. I doubt there will be any official Microsoft drives.

      • Ross Kemp

        Thank you .
Good to hear a Amazon cheapie HDD will beef up my XB1 .

  • Guest

real names? are you kidding me?? This is a gaming console, not Facebook or Google.

    • http://summified.com/ Ry L

it has like 4 levels of privacy customization including not using it at all. Calm down.

    • ryder4life22187

What’s so bad about real names if you have a long list of friends sometimes its easier for them to stand out rather than remember who it is. I think I have 51 friends on my list and sometimes can’t remember who just signed on

      • James Jiao

It should be something that *YOU* can control. So a way to attach a note to a gamertag on your friendlist would’ve been a better idea. The current implementation means that you are pretty much at the whim of your friend.

        • http://www.chrishartdesigns.com ch8rt

That would be nice as well, but its an awful lot of work for the control to only work that way.

    • AaronionRings

You’re being that guy. Please stop.

  • Bill Ziobro

I like the real name feature but if people choose not to use it, it doesn’t really help. All I ever wanted was a way to add my own note to my friends. This way I could put “Bob Smith” in a note tied to XXsupersniper34XX23

  • Lakerfanalways

I have not purchased an XBOX ONE yet but I was wondering if its already available or will be available with the June update, that when I go on my XBOX ONE that I will be able to see which one of my friends is online, like it will pop up and say that this particular person is online, just like I see with the PS4 Thanks

    • deadbox102

      It already does this.

  • John Smith

Has anyone heard if the “Launch to TV – as a default Xbox setting” option will be in the June update? Thanks!

  • NibblingPanda

Hopefully this new update also includes fixes for the lingering Bluray Drive issues introduced from previous builds. Such as, like mine, when I use the “Instant-On” feature, the drive doesn’t wake up along with the console. I have to wake it up by pressing the eject button, then I will hear that audible bluray drive sound we normally hear from the beginning. Or, such as, when the console is idle for a time (which I think is related to the issue above) the blu ray drive “turns off” and you have to wake it up again.

    Crossing fingers for fixes!

  • Lakerfanalways

Just wondering what hard drive might be good to buy for the XBOX ONE..I was checking out Seagate’s site and saw the 5TB external one(USB powered) but its 200 bucks not sure if its worth spending that much money on a hard drive or if it will be a good speed when playing games

    • ryder4life22187

Make sure to do some research on that seagate drive before you drop the cash. I know seagate has had issues with drives dying out on people in a years time.

      • Lakerfanalways

I have a seagate drive 4TB power adapter supply and it works great, have had it for a few years, problem is its already a discontinued model since its old..now seagate only has USB powered drives, no longer any adapter powered drives..so not sure what to go with..havent had any experience with western digital so dont know how good they are

        • ryder4life22187

Western digital drives are the best drives I’ve used so far. They last longer then most drives I’ve used before

          • Lakerfanalways

Ive seen online those Western Digital My Book 4TB drives I think that is the highest it will go not sure how good they are..I would buy the seagate USB powered 5TB drive but not sure if the USB powered ones are maybe less reliable than the wall powered ones

  • Jordan Blyth

so will we EVER get 3D Blu Ray support? it really sucks that neither PS4 or Xbox One support it yet and i have to keep my PS3 connected to watch them.

    • Death Dealer

Yes, an app update shoud be available for that in the next couple of months.

  • Chuck

This is of little use until they actually start releasing games people want to play.

    • deadbox102

Judging by your comment you don’t read the sales data.

    • http://Www.mylifewithgaming.wordpress.com/ Mitchell Hall

      lame

  • Adam

There has been a lot of good updates recently, but they miss the simple things. What about the option to get rid of the beeping noise every time you move in the menu’s. Why can’t you choose to disable just the hand gestures of the Kinect? Plus, why can’t you delete your notifications history?!!

  • Death Dealer

Major, I’ve been receiving some request from my friends if MS could do another public announcement to allow more people into the preview program.
Could you check into that (and perhaps make it happen)?

    • Shomberlon

If you go to the preview registration in the apps, you can invite your friends in to the programme from there.

      • Death Dealer

I know that, but it’s more for the friends of friends of friends making it all a bit cumbersome instead of a simple registration.
I personally am not fond of having to befriend people I have rarely talked to (basically don’t know) just for spreading out beta builds.

  • avi

    awesome, now one last thing.
give us backgrounds and transparent tiles.

  • GmailIsDown

my console just got a system update. not sure what it is. my console is not set to always on and i feel i am always among the last who gets a system update.

i am not in the beta program.

    • Death Dealer

If it’s build 1406 (june 2014), then you have the new update, otherwise it’s still 1405.

      • GmailIsDown

thanks. i checked and it is still 1405

  • chris

Any chance the Hard Drive update can make its way to Xbox 360? I know we already have it but we have the stupid 32GB limitation. Since Xbox One is getting Hard Drive update how hard can it be to just remove the limitation in the Xbox 360?
