Attack on Titan's pacing is unusual, but its time is never wasted. Time is just spent liberally on that special thing most important to the story: listening for a human heartbeat at the bottom of the food chain. It's not only a well-written, fun action show, but a phenomenon that deserves all the hearts it has captured.
Though this fan service-focused modern fantasy tale features an unusually strong male harem lead and has some interesting ideas, it wastes what potential it has and ultimately ends up excelling at nothing.
While not a masterpiece as anime movies go, this tale of a young woman tracking down shape-changers in 19th century Edo is a solid, entertaining, and well-animated work of historical fiction.
While technically this adds very little to the main story, it is still enjoyable in that good old One Piece way – crazy villains, a good central team of characters, and really weird wildlife. It's not perfect, but it doesn't feel like a waste of time to watch, and for a filler arc, that's not so bad.

A 26-year old unemployed man from Toyohashi City in Aichi Prefecture was arrested on Monday for threatening a woman on online message board 2Channel in response to the woman's voice-over of a Touhou Project character (not specifically the character displayed at right). At approximately 5 p.m. on Saturday, the man threatened a 22-year-old woman in Himeji City who is currently working part-time doing voice-overs for a video inspired by the Touhou Project. He wrote that he would “pour gasoline on her and burn and destroy her.” The man uploaded her real name to the message board, and wrote that she “considerably damaged the character” and that “she should receive divine punishment.”

Singer Gero (Brothers Conflict) interviewed Clara of the musical duo ClariS on the Japanese television program Mezamashi TV on Sunday. During the interview, Clara announced that although the second member of ClariS Alice has left the group, the unit ClariS has not ended. The anime studio AICconfirmed on Monday that it is working on Ai Tenchi Muyo!, the new Tenchi Muyo! anime series. The studio's website notes the animation production is moving forward, and that the official website will open this summer. The city of Takahashi in Okayama Prefecture announced last month that it is sponsoring the new anime. The anime will be set in Takahashi, as the city hopes fans will come on a "pilgrimage" to see the setting of the anime, and plans to sell goods and host related events. The series is slated to run for 50 five-minute episodes on Tokyo MX starting in October.

Yukito Ayatsuji, the author of the horror light novel Another, reported last week that he intends to start serializing a new novel, tentatively titled Another 2, this year. However, he had two story ideas he was still contemplating for the novel. He asked his fans if they want to read a story set in 2001 or 2009. He then added that the new novel will probably begin serializing "in a certain monthly magazine" this fall, and that it will probably be a 2001 storyline.

France's annual Annecy International Animation Film Festival announced the winners of its awards on Saturday. Production I.G's hand-drawn Giovanni's Islandfilm won the Jury Distinction prize. This is the first Annecy prize won by a Japanese feature since 2011, when Keiichi Hara and Sunrise's Colorful anime film won at the festival. Giovanni's Island tells the story of two brothers living on the island of Shikotan. Their family and the people of the island hear of Japan's loss in the war and are told not to worry. However, their island gets caught in the middle of the continuing conflict in the west and is invaded by Russian soldiers. The boys meet a western girl on the island named Tanya and the older of the brothers, despite their language barriers, cultural differences, and warnings from friends, starts to fall in love with her.
