PC Drivers for the Xbox One Controller Now Available

Beginning today, new PC drivers for the Xbox One controller will be available for download, offering PC gamers a better way to play using the Xbox One controller. We’re planning to release the drivers as part of a Windows update in the near future; however, today, I am happy to offer early access to our dedicated PC gamers on MajorNelson.com.

We know our fans have wanted PC compatibility, and we know they wanted to be able to use the Xbox One controller with the same games and applications they have been playing with using the Xbox 360 controller. We can’t wait for them to play their favorite PC games with what we consider the best controller ever made and we’re excited for fans to experience the improved D-pad, redesigned battery compartment, new comfortable design and offset analog sticks. The new PC drivers will enable the Xbox One controller to be used with any game that featured gamepad support for the Xbox 360 controller. Simply download the drivers, connect your Xbox One controller to your computer through a micro USB cable and you’ll be gaming in no time.

While I’m glad that I can now use an Xbox One controller for my PC games, I’m surprised that this isn’t a control panel item with configuration options for multiple controllers and WiFi Direct settings. Since WiFi Direct uses WiFi protected setup to automatically configure an ad-hoc connection I’m sure MOST recent motherboards with WiFi would likely support this ability to connect to multiple Xbox One controllers wireless. Make it happen Major Nelson!

  The X1 controller doesn’t use WiFi direct though.
  It would be good to have some configuration/calibration settings though.

Nice, but after using the controller on the PC i get sync issues with it on the Xbone. It looses connection and i have to restart the console to get it to work.

  Yes. Because you have to re-associate the controller with whatever device it’s using. I think you have to hit the sync button on the controller first, then the sync button on the XBox. I read on MS official site that this should get it to re-associate, not just for the XBone controller, but also the XBox 360 controller.

For anyone looking for a specific fix for Windows 7 64-bit platforms,, instead of all the vague solutions people are posting around the net, The answer lies in Windows Update, In the optional updates, not the important ones like you’d think and its not necessarily a recent update, seeing as no one else narrowed down the problem, its these two updates in the Optional section>

  I strongly believe these are this is the key to getting it to immediately work, as I did NOTHING to the PC or controller other than doing ALL updates to date + plugging in the controller. The PC did the rest. The device really is ‘plug & play’.

      Im pretty sure it will work on Vista, as its very similar to Windows 7.
      
      Maybe do some more research to see if it’s Vista compatible.
      Also, you should ditch Vista and go with the much better W7 imo, I even enjoy it more than W8.

        Sadly it seems they did not release the driver update for Vista. At least not yet. hopefully they will as Win7 is not an option for me for now.

  Dude you’re awesome. I don’t know if you had seen my previous post but I got the drivers to work on my Win 8.1 machine but not my Win 7 machine. After installing the updates you mentioned on the Win 7 machine it worked flawlessly! Thanks, man!

>>> Hi guys, good news. Got it to work by just plugging the newly purchased ‘XBone Controler + Charge & Play Kit’ WITHOUT downloading & installing the above posted driver! :S
(I know, im shocked too!)

-Newly formatted Dell Studio, full MS updates completely installed & up-to-date, Windows 7 x64, i5 Processor.
-Did NOT download or install posted driver from this webpage!!!
-Took the controller out of the box, plugged the MS Charge & Play Micro USB cord that came in the box, Without the battery pack in (to save battery life until wireless dongle came avail. for sale).
-As soon as controller was plugged in it immediately installed the software (took 5 full mins!).
-Once install completed, started Steam, Steam immediately recognized the controller plugged in, and have full access to menu navigation & gameplay while using the new controller.
-DONE!

Gaming since 1981, I lived thru all the great eras, and still love my games even tho life prevents you to play more as you get older due to responsibilities eating up your time.
XBox 360 is the greatest console & controller in history!

With that being said, the new XBone controller is fabulous!
They got one thing right, they didn’t change a already good thing which is the XBox 360 controller, but refined its features in an evolved sort of way – which was the right move MS.
It feels like a ‘tighter’ controller as its design is more ‘mature’, dense, improved & quality materials with great modern texture, no longer flimsy plastic. Fits better in your hand, micro USB cord ends are HQ, joysticks too high as it lessens accuracy from an engineering standpoint (but you wont notice), ‘X’ & ‘A’ buttons slightly too close to right joystick as thumb rubs against joystick edge, dislike the buttons as in 2014 they should be illuminated for dark room gaming, all buttons make a click sound which is annoying, the click feel is wanted, not the sound, triggers are fantastic with a great modern spring feel to it, bumpers feel cheap & also noisy with clicks, Home Button looks cheap and a step back from the 360 controller, XBone controller looks more minimal which somehow in 2014 is welcomed as it looks refreshing & refined, AA battery option + extremely small battery pack is welcomed to satisfy all gamer preferences, altho this controller has a superior battery life vs the 360 gamers will love the option to use HQ rechargeable batteries, battery case sinkened to hide battery pack & modernize controller, haven’t found a use for 2 menu buttons in middle of controller via Steam, D-pad is poorly seated and clicks loud lessening the life of use as I feel from exp. that it will get loose with overuse, controller is slightly smaller in all diameters.
To date, no wireless support with PC use – USB cord only as you play. I hate wires, so im REALLY looking forward to some sort of release for wireless capability soon as well as a Battery Charging Station like XBox 360 had.

Verdict:
I love the controller, very happy with it regardless of minor details, as im a quality man, I love the fact that this is a higher quality feel & play in terms of responsive control due to design – and to me that increases my pleasure while playing, so to me its worth it!

For you, well, if you have the money def. get the newer XBone controller, but if you already have your setup, I say save your money, as the 360 controller is still a great controller vs the XBone, and NOT worth the money to upgrade – unless you have money to burn, then id say go for it to increase the pleasure of playing. And if you were to not upgrade right away, id say keep your eye out for a great deal over the next 2 years if you run across one, then pick up a couple as a treat to yourself. <<<

The solution for error 37 is to update “Windows 7″ through “Windows Update”, are only required to install updates for “Windows 7″. All boats. After restart the pc and retry installing the driver, and it works!

The controller doesn’t move the mouse and it doesn’t work in every game. The game has to support a controller You can test it by starting steam and going to big picture mode it should be able to control that.

Hi i had error 37 also drivers were installed and controller recognised but no inputs being registered on calibration. the solution was that i did not have the usb 3.0 drivers installed from my motherboard manufacturer website (everything had worked in the usb slot uptill this btw).

now my problem seems to be that the controller only works for circa 30 seconds in say outlast, burnout paradise, fez etc before it freezes whatever i was pressing at that particular time spamming it, disconnecting and reconnecting the controller gives me another 30 seconds. This is not every game tho some work just like tomb raider or dishonored.
Anybody know what the problem here is?

Hey Nelson… I would just like to inform you (and your team) that the RT and LT aren’t working…
And as a second thing, I would like to tell you that if I connect my Madcatz Tournament Edition 2 Killer Instinct Fightstick to my PC, the RB an LB are switched around (and probably RT and LT if they were working)

Anyways, thanks for the drivers, looking SO much forward to using my XBone controllers on my PC

  Update… Can see they actually do work in a game like Watch_Dogs and work as axles and I’ve seen someone write in a comment far below…
  Funny part is that in the driver settings there’s set up for 10 bottons and axles for the left and right stick, there’s an Z-axle mentioned there, but it doesn’t react to anything.
  It’s a little confusing that there’s two bottons in the settings that doesn’t do anything at all, and that the RT and LT don’t work as bottons… Especially considering people with a fightstick, where the triggers aren’t triggers at all but just bottons…
  Please get the triggers to work as both as they did with the X360 Controller…

    They are axes, not axles.
    The LT and RT triggers are treated like an axis as they are analogue. Ranging from -100 to 100. They aren’t digital buttons. They are mapped to the Z axis. If a game treats it like a digital button that is only because the developers have specifically designed the game that way. The extra two buttons, 9 & 10, are the left click and right click buttons on the sticks.

  A lot of games I had to select the controller option in the game’s ‘Controls Options’ by using the mouse first.

Cannot get any thing other than the left stick working on Tomb Raider one. Have checked all updates in Win 7 x64, everything up to date including optional – any ideas? Thanks

Don’t install the drivers, just update all your ‘Windows Update’ and restart PC.
Then plug in new controller and it installs it for you that takes 5 mins.
After that it works!

Ok, I just remember reading somewhere from an Microsoft spokesperson that a PC version of the controller could possibly be coming in the future and that they were working on a wireless mode.

It would have been good if they made the new surface pro 3 compatible with it without an additional dongle. It seems strange that they wouldn’t. Maybe in the next version of surface.

So now that this is a thing, do you guys think it’s worth getting a One controller if I don’t have a One yet? Is it that big of an improvement over the 360 controller?

  It really depends on how big your hands are. While the controller is a tiny bit bigger, the sticks are smaller and feel more precise and the two triggers are really nice. The d-pad is an immense improvement if you play games where you used the d-pad a lot. (I.E. for me fighting games like Street Fighter). The down sides for me are the thumb stick and bumpers are harder to press. Overall though it’s a major improvement over the 360 version and I’m glad I have it. I actually own an XB1 though and I don’t think I would purchase just a lone controller for the PC if I had the 360 one already. If you have the money the choice is yours and I can say with complete honesty that it is an upgrade.

Just a tip to anyone having issues with the switch from a 360 to One controller, make sure if you installed the drivers with the wireless dongle to full uninstall those drivers, as they seem to cause some games to conflict.

Only problem I’ve having now is any time I start my computer the rumble goes nuts for like 10 seconds and bounces off my desk. Keep forgetting about it until it happens, hoping driver update stops that nonsense.

Love the spelling/grammar police and trolls, they always try try to ruin other people’s days to feel better about them selves, and in many cases do so because the internet is the only place they have a chance at feeling better than others or even equal.

I was thanking for the release of the drivers, and reported something I found faulty with them… I even wrote an update later that it was only 2/3 of my problem that was actually a problem.

You my good sir haven’t contributed with anything at all here, you only got here to correct my spelling for some fun reason… I feel sorry for you, and hope you’ll be getting a more interesting life soon. Good luck to you

I just got a wire and connected my wireless controller, and it quickly downloaded the drivers by its self hasle free. I didn’t need to download any of these drivers.

Got the error: code 37. Troubleshooting prompts reinstalling drivers. Doesn’t fix it, so it prompts troubleshooting again to reinstall drivers. Disappointed, as I ordered a controller for this.
