BACK AWAY SKELETONS I HAVE A GAME TO REVIEW! AHHH!
After dying for the 1000th time, I decided to calm down before reviewing this game in utter rage and/or tears. Let’s get this started and not talk about how vampires and warlocks are evil. Legend of Dungeon – a roguelike action adventure game that has 4 player offline Co-op action and active online leaderboards. For you non-hardcore roguelike or even people that want to get in this genre I’d recommend getting into this game over other roguelikes game such as Spelunky or Dark/Demon Souls.
As blasphemous as that sounds hear me out. Legend Of Dungeon like most roguelike are brutal and random but one of its best factors is the ease of how the game feels when playing it. The first you’ll notice when playing the game is the sounds of ambient styled music makes you the player feel that game is conquerable. Outside of the death sound effect nothing really adds to deter players from to continue playing. The pixel art and lighting effects are gorgeous adding a temple feel when exploring certain floors and when you level up that ray of glowing lights is so satisfying.
Legend of Dungeon has tons of items and weapons that have unique effects removing a lot of the mundane ways to kill enemies like in other games. Why slash a skeleton down if you can summon a cyclops and watch the mayhem? Need a speed boost? Wear the Sultan hat and zip by enemies. Depending on what you have really affects on how you will play tremendously but not enough to damper your enjoyment. Some roguelike games forces to you think or focus with a mentality such as “If I don’t get this type of item or have X amount of cash by this level/point I’m screwed”.
Legend of Dungeon is not without faults. When you pause the game it goes to the same menu that looks exactly like the screen where to start the game. A personal thing I dislike about the game is that there isn’t an “encyclopedia” or a list where you can look up in the game for every monster, item, or weapon you have seen or obtain to learn about its uses or even a little back story.
Should you check out Legend Of Dungeon?
- Overall Score - 8/10 8/10
Overall Legend of Dungeon is a good time that will sink hours of your time and possibly your friends time without grinding you to frustrating boiling point.
There are tons of weapons and items to disperse your enemies.
The lighting effects are super cool.
Arguably have an ensemble of the coolest hats ever to be equipped in a videogame ever.
Enemy animations are unique and well done.
Rarely you’ll feel the frustration of “Shit I died” when dying in this game.
The sounds effects and music are well done giving an amazing retro feel.
Laser Kitty is the best weapon ever!
Your inventory is infinite making it hard for switching items/weapons/equips on the fly as you explore
There is not a real “pause screen” per say. It goes back to the menu where you the start the game.
There isn’t a encyclopedia/treasure in the game that explains the weapons/items or even the monsters.
